Word Verification

I'll be perfectly honest with you, I really do not like word verification. When I'm bashing out a comment to give to someone, and say hello and then I have to stare at some letters and try and decipher them. Well, it isn't fun. Especially not at this early hour of the morning. It irritates me when the smudge I believed was an l turns out to be a k. A k?? Yes. That's what I thought.

I understand the word verification is supposed to prevent robots coming to get me. However, on my old blog, that I had for just under 2 years I received about 2 weird comments. That doesn't seem very frequent. It was in the good old days when word verification wasn't automatically put onto blogger blogs. And then I just deleted those comments. So no harm done! I'm still here!!

Let us comment freely, with the fear of evil robots gone! You may say, what's the problem with just putting word verification on, just in case? The problem, my friends, is inconvenience. And if you all get eaten by these robots because of me, then I do apologize - at least we will know the truth, and the reason for word verification.
Actually Heather from the popular The Secret is in the Sauce blog posted recently on her own blog about saying no to word verification.

That said, there are obviously two sides to the story. Apparently some blogs get terribly spammed, and have to put it on. Anyway, those annoying letters can actually also be beneficial to us, and most excellent at cheering you up.

For example, have you ever been stuck for a word to say? Bored of lol, tired of supercalifragilisticexpialidoicious, you need look no further. Nip over to a friends blog, and (whilst commenting) take note of the word that you must type out. You may as well memorize and use it when you have the chance. Use instead of a swear, use to fill the uncomfortable silence!

Also, childrens names. Sometimes, when my pregnant sim gives birth on sims2, suddenly I am stuck for a name. I need only press Ctrl+Alt+Tab to minimise the screen and have a check on my favourite blogs, and their word verification feature. No, little russian Reikinc and his sister Dinfuntr do not get teased at school. Other great names would be Subegmat and even Ansymi (She lives just down the street). If you comment enough you may even find a name suitable for a real child. Looking for something exotic? Try Siall, Comprago and Outoto.

The final perk is when the squished up, messed letters spell something real. I've had a 'disco ' once. I've also seen a 'weirdo'. Good times, good times. Definitely cheer you up material.

Have some fun commenting. Feel free to make up your own mind about word verification. The lesser of two evils? A hilarious perk? Or an unecessary vexation?

For me, word verification is a big problem. The link for it to speak letters/numbers instead NEVER works, so blogs with word verification are a big no-no for me I'm afraid.

Because most of what Kelly puts on his blog is copied information and links, Blogger has put word verification on it for him to have to complete before he can publish a post. It's very annoying and he hates having to do it. That's part of the reason he doesn't post much. We tried asking for it to come off (there's a link for you to get a Blogger representative to review it or something) but we never even got a response, let alone any success (and we tried at least three times).

We've had our blogs for about 2 years now and almost never get spam comments and such. And the couple of times we have we've just deleted them and moved on with our lives. So far no killer robots. ;)

You are very funny...I don't have the word verification thing going on. And I don't think I've ever had a spam comment. Maybe one or two.

Thanks for visiting my blog!

I don't like word verification either. When I first started with the old blogger, I had ads leaving all sorts of comments that I had to always go back and delete, because that wasn't why I started my blog.

Then with the new version of blogger, I took it off and have had no problems, fortunately. And not having it on means Tori is able to read my blog, even if I do occasionally forget to explain the pictures I post, lol.

When I do go visit other blogs that have it, I too have trouble figuring out the letters they are asking for, and frequently have to try more than once to post my comment.

Even yahoo does it to me every once in awhile, when sending an email, I get a word verification come up, adn theirs are worse than bloggers!

You know... I don't even know if I have word verification on my blog or not? I'll have to go check out that! :P

But anyway, for the most part I do find word verification annoying, but it's nothing that's so bad that it prevents me from commenting. I don't want to inconvience my readers who do find it a pain though, so if it's on my blog (which I think it may be) I may consider taking it off, at least for a short bit of time to see if it's ok and I don't suddenly get spammed or anything! ;)

I detest word verification!! No I am not a Robot, thank you very Mr. Roboto. I need readers so its hard for me to really see what the letters are. I suppose that it keeps people safe from punishing but Yuck I have it!

Thanks for visiting my blog *smiles!*

I dont know if it shows any reflection on my ability to fully function in life, but sometimes with the word verification I get the words wrong...its kind of embarassing

I kind of get a kick out them -- when I'm awake enough to appreciate them, but if I'm dozy or in a bad mood, watch out!
Having said that, the little paranoid person within is still leaning towards keeping them on MY blog.

Thanks for stopping by Jess. I hope you'll drop in more often. I also think you'd like my main blog: Poetikat's Invisible Keepsakes
There you will find my poetry: presently 1 or 2 pieces and in the past, plenty.

I really find word verification annoying as well. It really bothers me on sites where I am trying to buy something, like Ticketmaster, where you only have a short amount of time to complete your purchase! In two minutes you have to put your credit card and address in, and decipher what this jumbled up mess is on the screen!

Great blog! :) And thanks for stopping by mine!

Very funny! I am going right now to disable the word verification thingy on my blogs.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today!

Nice article on the Eurovision Song Contest, Jess! I did not know Katrina and the Waves were British!

When I think of Eurovision, I can't help but ENvision "Father Ted". Have you seen that episode?

You come up as being in Leicester on my tracker - I have relatives there (and elsewhere in England) and have been there a number of times.

This is too funny. I'm going to look at all those words in a different light now. Thanks for stopping by my blog :)

Normally they dont bother me so much, I just find them inconvenient. Some of the words given can be rather amusing though. I actually had one that was ummm lets just say colorful and rather x-rated (not that I can remember what the word was off-hand). MySpace allows one to use the word-verification (known as Captcha) there. Man I really hate those. Why there and not here? Because oftentimes Im not leaving a comment per se but just a "kudos" which isnt much more than clicking a dot and hitting post. It's just a good way to let the author know I was there to read what they had to say. Why figure a "captcha" to post a kudos? Now I can understand if I wrote a whole long comment but for a "kudos"???

LOL @ Iggy! ;)

And, btw... Chicago... That's OK about the pictures. I appreciate it when people put descriptions with the pictures, but at the end of the day it is your blog. Just don't expect comments on them if they don't have descriptions. ;)

LOL I loved this! I'll take it off my blog if only I knew how!

Thanks for the shout-out; I guess I am just used to word verification, so it doesn't bother me; and I read EVERY comment I get, so I like to avoid spam . . . I know it's annoying, but hey that's just the bloggin' world we live in!
Cool post :)

ok, ok, after all these people blogging about word verification, i will try not having it for a while... i always felt it would keep the weirdos away... :)

Hey, don't all get rid of the word verification! I mean, sure it's not great all the time, but there are perks!!
Thanks for all your comments.

omg I know they fucking suck!

Maki said...

You do have a point - the most irritating part of word verifications is that I have to type in twice even when I thought I typed correctly. That sucks and waste my time!!!

Great post, Jess!

ps: i linked you on my blog if that was okay...

well i just have it, as ive been spammed wayyy to many times
(which is suprising, as i think the 'scariest' or 'most provocative' website ive ever been to is like teenvogue, haha)
but i mean, just incase.
i dont mind it too much, so i dont take to much notice too it. :P

And thanks so much for answering the questions!
i really appreciate it, just needed it so i could see what other people my age are doing, and you know, if im just unlucky or maybe too spoiled.

haha
and no no, worldwide is fine!
i mean, a teen is a teen, no matter where youre from!

Down with word verification!

I admit, I don't like it. It is difficult to find the time I need to visit all my blogging friends without having to fill that in every time. A lot of the time I do something wrong and have to do it twice..which is really irritating!

I've never had it, and I don't see the need for it as I have spam control and I have to approve the comments.

Good post..now I need to fill out my identity. :O Hmmm..I wonder if you have to do that on my blog.
